"Since most wives are 'in love' with their husbands when they marry, what happens to that love? If you analyze each individual situation biblically, many would fall into one of three categories of sin that will destroy love: selfishness (1 Corinthians 13:5), bitterness (1 Corinthians 13:5), or fear (1 John 4:18). Often it is a combination. However, no matter what has happened and what she is feeling, God can work in her life and her husband's life and He can give them a love for each other that they never dreamed possible." ~ Martha Peace
Hebrews 4:12: For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
John 16:7-8: Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. 8 And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment:
Romans 6:6-7 & 14: We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. 7For one who has died has been set free from sin. 14For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.
Ephesians 4:22: to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires,
Ephesians 4:24: and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.
Colossians 3:9-10: Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices 10and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator.
Ephesians 4:25-29 & 31-32: Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another. 26 Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, 27and give no opportunity to the devil. 28Let the thief no longer steal, but rather let him labor, doing honest work with his own hands, so that he may have something to share with anyone in need. 29 Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear. 31 Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. 32 Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.
Ephesians 5:11: Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them.
Ephesians 5:4: Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving.
Ephesians 5:18: And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit,
Philippians 4:6: do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.
Colossians 3:8, 12-14: But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth. 12 Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, 13 bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. 14And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.
Romans 13:12-14: The night is far gone; the day is at hand. So then let us cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light. 13 Let us walk properly as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and sensuality, not in quarreling and jealousy. 14But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.
As you can see, I am still working through THE EXCELLENT WIFE by Martha Peace. I'm not making progress as quickly as I would like however it is all in God's perfect timing. After completing this book I would like to follow up with Jerry Bridges' RESPECTABLE SINS...which is a fabulous book!!!
