For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. (James 1:23-24. ESV.)
This scripture reminds me of an illustration about which I read in a book. (It is my opinion the author's picture was reminiscent of Matthew 7:3-5.) He wrote about a person looking at his/her reflection in a mirror and rather than seeing the dirt on his/her own face instead claimed the mirror to be dirty.
Unlike the Matthew 7:3-5 reference, James 1:23-24 is speaking of those who hear the word of God and do not do it.
Romans 2:13: For it is not the hearers of the law who are righteous before God, but the doers of the law who will be justified.
James 2:14-20: What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? 15 If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, 16 and one of you says to them, "Go in peace, be warmed and filled," without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? 17So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.
18But someone will say, "You have faith and I have works." Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith by my works. 19 You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe—and shudder! 20Do you want to be shown, you foolish person, that faith apart from works is useless?
Matthew 7:24-27: "Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. 26And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. 27And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it."
John 13:17: If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.
Galatians 5:13: For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.
1 Peter 2:16: Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but living as servants of God.
John 8:32: and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.
You Lord have created me and know the deepest depths of my soul. You have searched me and know my heart. You and you alone will judge me according to Your laws.
Blessed is the man
who walks not in the counsel of the wicked,
nor stands in the way of sinners,
nor sits in the seat of scoffers;
2but his delight is in the law of the LORD,
and on his law he meditates day and night. (Psalm1:1-2. ESV.)
