Just the Head?

And he put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church, 23 which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all. (Ephesians 1:22-23. ESV.)

Sunday I heard a great message at a Sovereign Grace church plant. When I first saw the pastor was going to speak on "the church", I have to admit my immediate thought was, "Oh boy, this could get interesting," mainly because I feel there is great debate as to participation at a church with the issue being... "To attend or not to attend? That is the question." Does frequenting a church make someone faithful? If a Christ follower does not go to church does that mean they are without God's grace and the Holy Spirit? This topic appears to be kicking up quite a bit of dust on the internet (and other places as well I reckon).

The pastor said, "Christians do not operate independently in this world; they are part of Christ's Body, the church, of which Christ is the Head." He then gave a (humorous) visual demonstration of someone walking around with a person's head (tucked under their arm) lacking of the body that would ideally go with it... representing Jesus without the church. He also quoted Ephesians 5:25-32 and Kevin DeYoung who wrote,
"The church we love is as flawed and messed up as we are, but she's Christ's bride nonetheless. And I might as well have a basement without a house or a head without a body as despise the wife my Savior loves."

For me personally, "the body" is a HUGE blessing! (Part of which are members of the same church as I am, others are not, and some are absent all together from church). I have seen God do much work using "the body" in areas of provisions, encouragement, prayer, etc. It is so nice to know I am not alone. There are many...and (in my opinion) "the body" was designed as a support system...to lift up and not tear down. When I am (or a brother or sister in Christ is) in need, those requirements are met by God's grace through members of "the body".

In daily life, I am an independent contractor and most (if not all) of my clients are sisters and brother's in Christ. This past week was no different. As God would have it a sister in Christ had to find a last minute teacher for some workshop classes in the fine arts and through God's perfect orchestration (as only He can do) I was hired to instruct the students. Not to mention this opened the door to more opportunities hence making providing for my family a little easier.

Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, 16 from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love. (Ephesians 4:15-16.)

Aitzitik, maitasun egia har, hazi nahi modu guztietan berak burua, Christ, 16 dira horietatik bertatik gorputz osoa sartu zen eta preso elkarrekin batera bakoitzak dituen da hornitua, orduan zati bakoitza sartzen ari gara bezala funtzionatzen esker, gorputza hazi beraz eraikitzen dela bera eman maiteminduta daude. (Ephesians 4:15-16).

Pigem räägi tõtt armunud, meil on kasvada üles iga tee teda, kes on pea, Kristusesse, 16 kelle käest kogu keha, mis on ühendatud ja mida hoiavad koos iga ühise kellega ta on varustatud, kui iga osa on töötab korralikult, teeb keha kasvab, nii et see toetub ise üles armastus. (Efeslastele 4:15-16).

Olye de sa, pale verite a nan renmen, nou grandi nan tout fason an l 'ki moun ki nan tèt, nan Kris la, 16 nan men ki moun tout kò a, te reyini ansanm ak fèt ansanm ak tout ansanm ak kote ke li te ekipe, lè chak pati se ap travay byen, fè kò a grandi pou li kreye tèt li nan renmen. (Efezyen 4:15-16).

(Efesios 4:15-16).
